What is an Australian Labradoodle?
The authentic Australian Labradoodle was the dog which first captured the hearts of people all over the world. The true Australian Labradoodle was first created in the late ’60s with a Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle. In the early ’70s two breeders, Teagan Park and Rutland Manor, teamed up to improve the coat, temperament, health, and body type by infusing in three other breeds, the Irish Water Spaniel, the English Cocker Spaniel, and the American Cocker Spaniel. The result is the Australian Labradoodle. As they became extremely popular, literally hundreds of new breeders surfaced practically overnight, to cash in on the name. But most of them have decided to create their own new breed whilst at the same time parading it under the Labradoodle or Australian Labradoodle name.
What is an American Labradoodle?
Any breed that is a mix of only a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle no matter what generation. (i.e. F1, F1b etc.)
Some will tell you that American Labradoodles brought into their breeding programs will breed up to the Australian Labradoodle standard. We believe this is misguided information as the “recipe” cannot be replicated easily.
What is an F1, and an F1B?
F1 – This is the first generation cross of a Standard Poodle bred to a Labrador Retriever. Most have hair coats and shed, and many are hyperactive in their temperament.
F1B – Is the progeny of this first cross (F1) being bred back to a Poodle as a shortcut to producing the nonshedding allergy friendly coat which is present in 99% of the Authentic Australian Labradoodles. But with the predominance of Poodle in these puppies, the temperament, so carefully developed over many years by the Founders of the Australian Labradoodle breed is often sacrificed. We are not against F1’s or F1B’s, or any mixed breeds with a Poodle, because we love all dogs. But it is important to realize that they are a completely different dog to the authentic Australian Labradoodle as developed since the 1970s by the breed Founders in Australia.
Is there a difference?
Yes! Without a doubt!
Our research led us to conclude that the Authentic Australian Labradoodle is a dog without peer. It is the very dog the world has fallen in love with and with which we are committed to keeping the gene pool authentic and of true pure breed lines. We are devoted to the years of work which the founders have poured into their mission to develop the greatest dog ever known.
